Artist J.M.W Turner paints fire at Houses of Parliament 1835

The artist J.M.W Turner,was in London in 1834, when the Houses of Parliament caught fire. Alerted to the conflagration, he rushed from his dinner, grabbed his sketchbook and joined the several hundred people who were pouring in from all around Westminster to watch the scene. When Turner arrived the crowds were cheering and clapping. His masterpiece ‘Burning of the House of Lords and Commons’ was finished in 1835.
