Royal Observer Corps Cap Badge

Royal Observer Corps Cap Badge, symbol of those who watched over our skies.

The Observer Corps were initially mainly made up of volunteers rallied by the Air Ministry who realized that the British air defense system was below par and observation of the air was needed to warn of possible attack.

Royal Observer Corps

    • A system was needed to identify and locate aircraft.
    • Two hundred observation posts were established, manned mainly by volunteers, who kept a day and night watch of the skies over Britain.
    • These observer corps played a hugely important role during the Battle of Britain when they supplemented the crude radar network.
    • By 1941 they became the Royal Observation Corps.
