First Census of England and Wales 1801

The first census of England and Wales was undertaken on 10th March 1801.

    • The information gathered included the number of people and their occupations and the number of families and houses.
    •  The enumerators were generally the Overseers of the Poor in each parish.
    • Once summaries had been made of each parish the data was destroyed. Alongside a census of the total number of births, marriages and deaths in each parish was also compiled.
