Queen Elizabeth II Coronation 1953

After the death of her father King George VI, on February 1952, Princess Elizabeth flew home from a visit to Kenya. During her flight home, England’s Accession Council met to decide who would become the next monarch. 

Later in the day, at 7p.m, it was decided that Princess Elizabeth, would become Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned Queen, at Westminster Abbey, on June 2nd 1953, just over a year after she had acceded to the throne.

The crowds in London today will look similar today as Britain celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee
