After the death of her father King George VI, on February 1952, Princess Elizabeth flew home from a visit to Kenya. During her flight home, England’s Accession Council met to decide who would become the next monarch.

Later in the day, at 7p.m, it was decided that Princess Elizabeth, would become Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned Queen, at Westminster Abbey, on June 2nd 1953, just over a year after she had acceded to the throne.

The following footage shows the first ever coronation to be filmed, overflowing with Medieval pagentry and traditions that went back nearly a thousand years…..

The crowds in London today will look similar today as Britain celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee
